Book Tour Launch for
Focus On Love
By Candee Fick
Author Interview
Q: What is your motivation behind Focus On Love? Why did you want to write it?
A: The roots of this story are buried in the first book of the series, Dance Over Me. You see, I had a secondary character who didn't care much for God and I started wondering why. One day, sparked by a song on the radio, I remembered a time when—even as a pastor’s kid—I thought faith was all about a list of rules to keep rather than a relationship. Suddenly, I knew I wanted a romantic hero who would show Liz how to focus on the love instead of the religious rituals. Along the way it grew to include other facets of love including friends, family, military service for our country, and even finding a career we can devote ourselves to with passion and joy.
Q: What do you hope readers take with them after they've read it?
A: Since it's a sweet romance, I want readers to leave with a sigh, a sappy smile, a warm fuzzy feeling, and a new book boyfriend in Ryan. I want readers to have experienced the highs and lows of the journey along with Liz and then participate vicariously in her victory. But mostly along the way, I hope readers feel the tug toward a deeper or new relationship with the Creator of everything who still wants to be their personal Friend.
Q: Do you have a favorite scene that you can share with us?
A: One of my favorite scenes is when Ryan takes Liz along on a sledding adventure with his family. It's quite early in their relationship and working together on a photography assignment has resulted in a friendship. Except Liz is also fighting her attraction to Ryan. Anyhow, for the first time in a long time, Liz feels part of a happy family...which also opens up her heart a little more. A few romantic moments while building a snowman lead to a shared toboggan ride…where even a crash into a snow bank won't put out the fire and their romance is officially underway. This scene has all the giddy first-love feels and makes me smile just thinking about it.
Q: If you could sum up the book in one sentence, what would you say?
A: Can it be a run-on sentence? LOL. Here goes: When a photographer-turned-actress meets a freelancer who has temporarily put his sister's family before his career, the result is a picture-perfect romance that brings all facets of love into focus as they let their dreams develop.
Q: Share something about you that is unique – maybe about how/where you write… or your favorite snack foods?
A: I actually do the bulk of my creative writing during one hour per day. With a part-time day job, chronic health issues, a busy family, and an adult-daughter with special needs, I found myself always waiting (and wishing) for the perfect block of time in which to write. But since my stories wouldn't wait, I took a lesson from the folk tale about the tortoise and the hare. Slow and steady would actually add up faster than word sprints. Now I get up early and write before the household's morning chaos erupts. Often my "Turtle Power Hour" is the only creative writing I get done in a day, but because of the regular contact with my characters, I can use any rare quiet moments during the rest of the day to think about plot problems...which makes the next day's words flow faster. My other trick is a portable Bluetooth keyboard and my iPad mini with its Scrivener app which both fit easily into my purse for other stolen moments like during the kids' sports practices.
