The Art of Rivers
By Janet W. Ferguson

Author Interview

What was your motivation behind THE ART OF RIVERS? Why did you want to write it?

In 2017, the year I started this novel, drug overdoses killed over 70,000 people in the United States. Drug addiction and alcoholism are devastating families and communities. The novel delves into the various sides of addiction: from those ravaged by the agony of addiction, to those heartbroken over a loved one lost in addiction, to those who have been brutally scarred because of an addicted person’s actions, to those who have been healed from its clutches. Our communities are losing so many dear people to this ruthless adversary. I felt led to address and understand the issue more. I felt called to shine God’s hope into the dark places of pain and shame.

What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read it?

God grew me in so many ways writing this story—sometimes hard but beautiful ways. I had the opportunity to attend our state’s opioid summit, and my church began a jail ministry where I participated for a year. I also assisted during our state’s legislative session and learned some of the possible ways leaders are trying to deal with this epidemic. I read story after heartbreaking story of what drugs are doing to precious souls and the people who loved them. But I also heard stories of healing with God’s help. Addiction is a cunning and dangerous enemy. But God is able to heal and restore. We were all addicts in a way, slaves to sin, but Christ refused to leave us in that place. He made a way to rescue and redeem us.

Do you have a favorite scene that you can share with us?

That’s so hard. I do always like the angst leading up to the first kiss, and I love the happy ending scene at the end. In this novel, I had a secondary character named Davis that made me laugh (A total God thing), so every scene he showed up for, I loved! I know I’m a weird writer, but sometimes unexpected people become part of my stories. 🙂

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

Rivers wrestles with bitterness but learns to have mercy to people in the grip of addiction.

Share something about you that is unique - maybe about how/where you write, favorite hobby, or favorite snack foods?

One interesting thing about me that some people don’t know is that I am deaf in one ear. I often look weird circling people or trying to find a strategic chair in restaurants to get them on my good side so that I can hear them. The strange thing is that I didn’t lose the hearing in that ear until I was fourteen. I just woke up one day with ringing in that ear and eventually figured by answering the phone that I wasn’t hearing in it.

Rivers Sullivan bears both visible and invisible scars—those on her shoulder from a bullet wound and those on her heart from the loss of her fiancé during the same brutal attack. Not even her background as an art therapist can help her regain her faith in humanity. Still, she scrapes together the courage to travel to St. Simons Island to see the beach cottage and art gallery she’s inherited from her fiancé. When she stumbles upon recovering addicts running her gallery, she’s forced to reckon with her own healing.

After the tragic drowning of his cousin, James Cooper Knight spends his days trying to make up for his past mistakes. He not only dedicates his life to addiction counseling, but guilt drives him to the water, searching for others who’ve been caught unaware of the quickly rising tides of St. Simons. When he rescues a peculiar blond woman and her sketch pad from a sandbar, then delivers this same woman to his deceased grandmother’s properties, he knows things are about to get even more complicated.

Tragic circumstances draw Cooper and Rivers closer, but they fight their growing feelings. Though Cooper’s been sober for years, Rivers can’t imagine trusting her heart to someone in recovery, and he knows a relationship with her will only rip his family further apart. Distrust and guilt are only the first roadblocks they must overcome if they take a chance on love.
