Author Interview

What was your motivation behind writing LOVE OVERBOARD?

I was watching one of my favorite movies, While You Were Sleeping, and I was struck by how one simple lie ended up so complicated. Even with the best of intentions, telling a lie or withholding the truth can really convolute an otherwise straight forward situation. The idea for my heroine, Caitlyn Moore, faking amnesia started as a “what if” scenario. She is well and truly over her ex, but he appears on her dream vacation—the first big goal she’s achieved—and throws her for a loop.

What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read it?

In writing the story, I came to understand the biggest lies were the ones the heroine, Caitlyn, told herself. Through the story, she has to confront what she believes is true. I hope readers examine what might be holding them back from achieving their goals.

Do you have a favorite scene that you can share with us?

This is an excerpt from one of my favorite scenes following Caitlyn’s first official piano performance from Greg’s perspective. This scene is a favorite because he sees her and is trying to build her confidence and navigate the complicated connection he feels.

She tilted her head and blinked rapidly several times. “Have I already played for thirty minutes?”

“Longer.” Brushing his fingers on her shoulder, he intended a gentle reassuring gesture. Instead, he rested a palm on her upper back with a surge of awe and protection. You’re remarkable, and I’ll keep you safe. He withdrew his hand and cleared his throat. “I owe you chocolate.”

“Yes.” She slid off the bench and stood in one fluid motion, her energy regaining with the promise of a sweet treat. “Lead the way.”

He extended his arm in mid-air and paused. Stopping himself from touching her was becoming second nature, but something about her invited a closer connection. In another time and place, he could investigate their potential. Until better circumstances arrived, he was locked in a dance between friendliness and professionalism with limited personal interaction.

She widened her eyes and nodded.

As they stood like the most ill-conceived statues ever crafted, he froze. Dropping his arm, he clasped his hands behind his back and stood at the microphone. “Everyone. Please join me in a round of applause for our marvelous performer, Ms. Caitlyn Moore.”

The remaining crowd, a mixture of guests and servers, clapped loud enough to rival her music.

Rounding her back, she raised a hand to her reddened cheeks.

Don’t make yourself small. You were born to shine. He cleared his throat. “Please enjoy the rest of your evening.” He stepped off the dais.

Caitlyn followed him.

Exiting the lounge, they meandered side by side through the passageways of the ship. At the top of the staircase, the doors slid open to the deck.

She exhaled and strode to the railing. “Wow. The view is glorious.”

Vibrant streaks of orange and pink splashed across the sky, contrasting with the inky black coastline in a dramatic sunset.

Glancing over her shoulder, she smiled.

The background was nearly worthy of the woman center-stage. With her wide grin stretching across her face, she crinkled the corners of her sparkling icy blue eyes. In a few quick steps, he joined her. In her presence, he experienced contentedness and relaxed. He spent so much of his time tightly coiled, ready to spring wildly. With her, he could breathe and focus on the present.

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

Fake amnesia has real consequences. To expand on that, I think everyone makes mistakes and taking responsibility for actions helps us grow.

Share something about you that is unique - maybe about how/where you write... or favorite snack foods?

When I’m writing, I’ll often find a song or an album that I connect with and I’ll play it on repeat for the duration of the project (including edits). If it’s an entire album, my family doesn’t complain. But when I’m listening to a single song on repeat for an hour (or more, if it’s a weekend), I get pushback from my kids. Although, I have noticed they picked up the same trait. I’ll walk by a bedroom while the kid inside is studying and hear one song over and over.
