Author Interview

What inspired you to write FALLING FOR THE INNKEEPER?

I started writing FALLING FOR THE INNKEEPER after I quit my job to take care of my three young boys full time. They’re fantastic kids, but it’s easy to feel like you’re losing your identity when you’re a full-time, stay-at-home mom. I wrote most of this book while my kids were napping or in the babysitting room at the YMCA, and it gave me something fun to daydream about while I was changing dirty diapers and doing endless loads of laundry!

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

Set at a charming Cape Cod inn, this sweet story features a workaholic lawyer and a wary single mother who can’t help falling in love despite the fact that his career depends on taking away the only real home she’s ever known.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

This is a tough question, because I relate to both of the main characters so much! Laura struggles with the feeling that she’s not good enough, while Jonathan believes that he has to achieve certain milestones in his career before his “real life” can begin. I’ve definitely fallen into both of these traps in the past, and I’m grateful that I have friends who will point me back to the truth when I start to fall prey to these false beliefs.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

I hope this book reminds readers that our pasts don’t have to define us. No matter how badly we’ve been hurt, no matter how long we’ve clung to false beliefs, we can choose to move forward and embrace love and light from this moment forward.

As this is your debut, what has been most challenging and most rewarding about becoming an author?

The most rewarding thing about becoming an author has been seeing my story come to life! The day my editor sent me the book’s cover illustration was pretty amazing, because it made the whole thing really tangible and real.

The most challenging thing has been finding the time to write! My publisher bought FALLING FOR THE INNKEEPER right before Christmas and requested a big round of edits that were due just after the new year, so it was a real scramble to get the rewrite done before the kids went on Christmas break! And now, of course, it’s even harder to get time alone to write, since my kids are home 24/7 due to the coronavirus quarantine. It’s been a big adjustment, but I’m excited about the projects I’m working on now!

What is something about you that is unique or that we may not know?

I’m a great badminton player, and I love to rollerblade!
