We're launching the Book Tour for BLADE OF ASH by C.F.E. Black

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Author Interview

What inspired you to write Blade of Ash?

A bouquet of things came together to inspire this series. First, a line from a TV show sparked my idea for the characters (yep, that’s how a writer’s brain works). If you’re curious which TV show, it was a line from Endeavour. British TV is superior, don’t you agree?

Second, I had just finished reading a rich fantasy with incredible characters and a wicked forest. I wanted to dive into writing fantasy with an evil “place” as one of the villains. I was nearly killed in the Grand Canyon, so, naturally, the villainous place in my story is a canyon.

And finally, the magic system blossomed out of a desire to portray biblical truth as having real power. All of that combined to inspire me to write the Scepter and Crown series.

What do you love the most about this story?

The romance! Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope, and I also literally *yearn* for there to be more clean fantasy romance books in the world. So I wrote one.

What challenged you about writing it?

Definitely the magic system. Magic systems are so hard to craft well, especially when trying to do so in a God-glorifying way. I knew I wanted to portray the power of God’s truths, but when dealing with the concept of truth and lies, one has to be very careful! I prayed a lot and had lots of feedback, both from Christian and secular sources. I wanted the book to be enjoyable for both audiences, not making the secular readers feel excluded but not compromising on the biblical foundation either.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

Aly, for sure! I wrote a lot of my insecurities into her—the universal insecurity of “imposter syndrome” and the worry about being “desirable.” But she’s also her own character with her own personality and goals. She’s a go-getter, like me, and she keeps her heart sort of closed off (prequel readers will understand this side of her more).

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

I hope that readers will be reminded of the importance of truth and the fact that we are at war with the lies all around us. I want this book to strike a chord with the reader’s heart, helping her consider what lies she might have believed and how best to combat them. We are all victims of lies, and we must fight against them with our only weapon, the truth!

What do you enjoy doing when you're not writing?

I’m a full-time mama to two adopted little boys (3 and 3 months) and they are my delight. I also teach high school Spanish part-time at a local homeschool co-op. When there is a moment left over (which, let’s face it, there really isn’t), I love to run, bake, and dance in the kitchen.

The only way to beat death is to chase it.

Newly crowned, Red blames one person for his father’s murder: the secret sorceress sworn to protect the king. Alyana Barron, Royal Sorcerer to the throne of Tandera, fears her magic is weakening. For reasons they don't fully understand, a powerful enemy twisted by dark magic wants them both dead.

When Red is cursed, his life entwines with Aly’s in ways neither of them expected. Together, they chase after a cure that will heal the king and restore her magic, but the closer they get to a cure, the nearer they step toward death, for the path to the cure is as dangerous as the curse itself.

Blade of Ash is the first in a new, epic YA fantasy series perfect for fans of clean enemies-to-lovers romance packed full of royal intrigue, legends, and plenty of ballgowns. If you like female bodyguards and forced proximity with life-and-death stakes, check out Blade of Ash.
