Author Interview

What inspired you to write TIME TO SHINE?

Research has shown that faith is a key protective factor for children and young people in today’s challenging world. I was fortunate enough to learn about God in Sunday School and my faith helped me navigate those tricky teen years, but I realise that this is not everyone’s experience. The History Village books were a tangible opportunity for me to remind kids that the God of the Bible is real, and that He loves them. I particularly wanted to impress upon troubled teens that they can turn to God with any problem, whether its pressure to get a good grade at school, or failing to meet other people’s expectations. From my experience, He can be trusted with both the big and small dramas of life.

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

Even people with the most ordinary skills or average abilities can make an extraordinary contribution to society and leave an indelible imprint for future generations!

What challenged you about writing this story?

“History Village Time to Shine” is set in ancient Damascus, a civilisation which was completely unfamiliar to me. In addition to having to research the geography, language, culture and food pertaining to this historic city, I decided to increase the degree of difficulty (!) by writing from the perspective of adult male characters. I wanted the authenticity of the story to be beyond doubt, as it pertained to actual historical figures recorded in the Bible.

Which character do you most relate to and why?

There are relatable qualities in most of my characters: Ally’s obsession to determine her future career while still quite young (I spent many a lunchtime at my school’s Career Counselling Center); Josh’s compulsion to do well academically; Ananias’ concern for his friends’ welfare; Judas’ need for material security; and the innate resistance to authority exhibited by most of my characters.

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

Herman Melville said “To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.” My mighty theme is the enduring transformation that God produces in people’s lives. I hope the reader will remember the personal encounters between God and these characters and the way He seeks to speak directly into people’s lives.

What is something about you that is unique or we may not know.

I have visited Lago di Como in Italy five times. (Covid prevented me from making it six times!)

Ally, Josh and Brendan are half siblings living in Australia who have a difficult situation to face at School and at home.  They have a special interest in the past as they have previously embarked on two time-travelling adventures with God's divine help.

Once again they embark on their latest time-travelling adventure into first century, ancient Syria.  On the road to Damascus the children meet the frightening Commander who is on a mission to find and punish anyone who disagrees with his religious views.  The children must quickly learn who can be trusted in this dystopian Village as they push back against the darkness and look for the truth.  In time, the children learn that ordinary people with extraordinary faith in God can have a monumental impact throughout the generations.

With the help of biblical heroes of old, this coming of age story will help young people discover their own unique purpose and mission in life.  If you enjoy action-packed, suspenseful drama enveloped in cultural history, you are going to love "Time to Shine".
